Never been gigged outside, I will throw 5 or 7 pins midi cables and connect cable. Dedicated MIDI IN, OUT, and THRU jacks (vs. shared OUT/THRU in the Mark II). There are a multitude of ways to connect to your Axe-FX II, including via a FASLINK connection which allows two-way communication via an XLR cable.
