He was accepted age 16 to the Beckenham School of Art, going on to study at the Royal College of Art from 1942. He later taught at Leeds College of Art and Middlesborough College of Art, going on to travel extensively – including to Jamaica and Cuba – and to teach in these exotic locations too.
