Region free for DVDs - video shows it playing a Region 1 disc.Note this doesnot apply to Blu-ray, which is locked to Region B. No remote. However just about any Sony Blu-ray remote will operate this - I have tried the RMT-VB200D, RMT-VB201D, RMT-B109P & RMT-B120P for example.
