Antique cobalt blue glass eye bath. Hand-blown glass example with pedestal foot. The base shows a snapped and ground pontil scar. The piece sits on a surface with a slight wobble due to the centre being slightly more raised than the rim. The glass is a deep cobalt blue colour which appears very dark until held to the light where it shows a bright sapphire blue tone. Eye baths were used in the 19th century for washing or bathing the eye with water or medicinal solution and were commonly kept on dressing tables or in pharmacies. Condition: There are several very small flea bites to the rim and a couple of small nibbles to the edge of the foot. Light surface scratches consistent with age and use. No cracks or repairs.
