Being sold as spares or repair. I have tried greasing the sled / rail that is used to move the laser, and also cleaning the lens with isopropyl alcohol. I bought this CD player new in 1990. It has been very lightly used (around once a week on average for the first 4 years, and then less than once a month on average since).
