The wheel itself is plastic but spins on a metal spindle inside the wooden box. The wheel is not removable out of the box but the platter can be taken out for cleaning or adding lubricant. The box comes wirh a built in drawer containing the cloth betting table and the plastic chips. Received as present but has never really been used so pretty much good as new.
