TAHITIAN PEARLS are grown in black-lipped pearl oysters (Pinctada margaritifera). The size of the oyster varies from 15 to 25 cm. It is known as variety cumingii in French Polynesia and variety galtsoffii in Hawai. Tahitian pearls don’t actually come from Tahiti, but rather from French Polynesia, and other small atolls throughout the South Pacific. There were times when pearls were harvested one by one from wild oysters living under the sea. Today there are not many traditional divers that still search for natural pearls in this manner.
