They have articulated little legs, which do not touch the surface, but they balance on four thin bristles; placed on top of a piano they “dance/ jiggle” from the vibrations when the keys are played. I have seen pictures of similar dolls inside glass or plastic structures on top of a toy piano in the USA; I have also seen them displayed in museums.
