1880s Borax Hauling: Impressive Mule Teams in Death Valley

During the 1880s, twenty mule teams were used to haul borax from Harmony Borax Works to the railroads in Mohave, California. The teams could carry loads of 36 1/2 tons and completed the 165-mile trip in 10 days. This feat was impressive but short-lived, as in 1888 the wagons and mule teams made their final journey out of Death Valley. The postcard features a photo taken by Warren Hill and was produced by Dexter Press, Inc. on May 21, 1969.
