The Chas. Forschner & Sons Dairy Scale was likely manufactured between the late 19th century and the mid-20th century, and similar scales were in use until at least the late 1970s. Manufacturing: Charles Forschner founded his scale-making company in New Britain, Connecticut, in 1855. The company later moved to New York City and was eventually sold in 1957. Usage: Forschner scales were known for their durability and were used in general stores, butcher shops, and markets. According to the International Society of Antique Scale Collectors, these types of scales were standard in smaller post offices from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. Some were still in use as late as the 1970s.
