I believe these sets were designed by Baruch Harold Wood (BH Wood) to be extra robust and were, I think, made in France, to be sold through BH Wood's "Chess"magazine, which was based on Sutton Coldfield (see the final photo for an original advert for this set (this is not included in the sale)).
