A fine and rare Staffordshire Medici lion, c.1780-1820. Modelled with a noble and imposing expression with a paw held firmly over the globe, this figure is symbolic of a Britain whose empire was beginning to have dominion over the world. The lion features attractive underglaze colours, and the form of the face is more unusual to most specimens that are normally seen. The base carries various labels, with one indicating that this specimen was formerly in the collection of F. R. Briggs, an old and important collection of early English ceramics. The lion is overall in a fine original condition with no repairs or restoration. It presents hairlines to the back, belly and to the plinth, alongside small losses to the tongue and teeth, and nibbles to the plinth.
