Scottish Protestant covenanters flag The Scottish Protestant Covenanters were a 17th-century movement of Presbyterians who pledged to defend their faith and the Scottish Presbyterian Church against royal interference from the Stuart kings, who sought to impose episcopacy. They signed Covenants, most notably the National Covenant of 1638, and their resistance led to the Covenanting Wars, the English Civil War, and a period of intense persecution known as the "Killing Times".
