So when you start you dont get best performance until a scrapping has taken off the outer protective layer. Then you will find with practice and use you will get the best perforance from your rod. With practice and trying different strikers and tinder materials (cotton woll balls work really well & thats the reason you find a tampon in alot of survival kits) you will soon master these rods.
