Akabanga - "little secret" (Kinyaruanda) The aromatic chili oil is obtained from the seeds of pods of the Piri-Piri plant, also called Pili-Pili, Peri-Peri or "African bird's eye chili") and refined with a little vegetable oil. Piri-Piri is yellow pepper and convinces with a slightly nutty aroma. The oil is ideal for dishes for which one would normally use conventional pepper. Meat dishes, stews and soups can be given a refined background spiciness. Akabanga has a pungency of around 100,000 Scoville and should only be used and seasoned in small quantities. The pepper oil comes from the volcanic slopes of Rwanda in East Africa. In the cooperative there, the farmers who grow the pods on the mountainsides earn more than they would from growing potatoes, corn or the like.
