The detection of synthetic diamonds and their distinction between natural stones is based on several steps. This includes the determination of diagnostic microscopic features, magnetic properties, UV fluorescence or Phosphorescence, spectroscopic methods and the specification of typical growth structures. For the detection of synthetic diamonds of specific types and color degrees (e.g. colorless to almost colorless), test devices for routine use were developed. There will always be differences in the structural, chemical and/or physical properties that will be analytically detectable.
