The two main branches were Matheson of Shiness, in Sutherland, and Matheson of Lochalsh. Donald, of the Lochalsh branch, was Constable of Eilean Donan Castle in 1539. There were other notable branches, including Bennetsfield in the Black Isle, Ross-shire.
