The first digit referred to the mandrel - either the no. 6 (ML) or the no. 7 (Large Bore). The 68 mouthpipe, for example, was from the no. 6 mandrel and cut 1" (8/8ths) from the small end. The closer to the small end the cut, the tighter the pipe.
