It takes a lot of energy to transmit an audio signal along the length of a vibrating spring. By the time the source audio signal reaches the spring reverb output transducer, most of the nuanced overtone content has been converted into mechanical energy. This is why spring reverb sounds so special, because what you hear is largely the spring's own resonant frequencies. The Light Pedal uses extremely sensitive optical pairs placed at specific locations on the spring to detect very nuanced movements on the surface of the spring as the sound waves travel through the spring. This method opens up a much wider Spektrum of frequencies, overtones and textures that would otherwise be lost in the mechanical reverberation process. The use of optical sensors also opens the doors to some new effect type.
