The original, polyurethane varnish was beginning to peel, so I stripped it off and recoated with a boiled linseed oil and wax concoction that has given the woodwork a very pleasant satin finish that coincidentally makes the neck silky smooth under the thumb (I’ll throw in a pot of the polish, and recipe, which will need rubbing on maybe once a year, or so, like a piece of antique furniture).
