The problem: they were too wide to work efficiently in a van. Their width resulted in very limited stowage options, and they were bulky when used inside as a bunk ladder. So we went straight to the manufacturer and had a ladder custom-made to a narrower width (14.5") so they fit perfectly under the Vanagon rear bench seat.
