The design was reproduced from part of a chart drawn by Captain John Mason in 1624 and used as a frontispiece to Sir William Vaughan's book "The Golden Fleece" published in 1626. Mason was "appointed Proprietary Governor of John Guy's Cuper's Cove (Cupids) colony in 1615.
