Following its maiden flight in September 1942 the B-29 was assigned to the Pacific arena, going into action against Japan in the last two months of 1944. In August 1945 it was the B-29s Enola Gay and Bock's Car which dropped the first atomic weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
