In 1501, Portuguese explorers Gaspar Corte-Real and his brother Miguel Corte-Real charted part of the coast of Newfoundland in a failed attempt to find the Northwest Passage. Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) was among the most important mapmakers of the eighteenth century.
