They are not coated with anything, just the natural wood that is sanded which results in a light color. Since White Oak is a closed-grain hardwood, it naturally repels water which makes it highly water and rot-resistant compared to Red Oak which is an open-grain hardwood and performs better indoors in furniture, cabinetry, and mouldings.
