Launched in 1996, the Neptune collection was introduced alongside the now-legendary Aquanaut. While the Aquanaut eventually became a global icon, the Neptune was designed to be the "third musketeer" of Patek's sports range—more formal than the Aquanaut but more adventurous than the Calatrava. Named after the Roman God of the Sea, the Neptune was Patek’s attempt at a "luxury cruise" watch. It was intended for a client who wanted a watch that looked at home on a yacht but could still handle a formal dinner. Like its larger mechanical siblings, the hand-finishing on the 4880's case and bracelet was held to the same standards as Patek's most expensive grand complications.
