This turned out to be due to a couple of inductors that had failed open circuit, which I’ve not seen before (these ones resemble resistors). Anyway these have been replaced and during fault finding I also checked all the electrolytic capacitors but they all tested within spec.

In good condition considering its age and still has its plastic cover the power switch is missing it’s silver cover but doesn’t effect its function. When using eject it does spring open very sharply and I was always worried that this could brake so I was pressing the button with my hand on the top of the door and letting it open steadily but I’ve been told that’s the way it works.
