Yucca schidigera, known as YUCCA, is a plant belonging to the Agavaceae family, native to the southwestern United States and Mexico. The Indians recognized YUCCA as “a tree of life” with beneficial health activities. Its extracts have been used for centuries in folk medicine to treat a wide variety of inflammatory disorders, especially headache head, gonorrhea, arthritis and rheumatism. It has been known for many years that saponins have antiprotozoal activity by complexing with cholesterol. in protozoan cell membranes, causing damage to membrane integrity and cell lysis. Yucca schidigera is a medicinal plant that may have beneficial effects in the prevention and treatment of arthritis. The active components of YUCCA include steroidal saponins and polyphenols such as resveratrol and yuccaols. Saponins may have antiarthritic effects associated with their activity antiprotozoan. One study observed a free-living protozoan, Naegleria, universally present in the joints of arthritic patients. Tropozoites of the organism were found in the intestine. Support for this theory was provided by the effectiveness of metronidazole, an antiprotozoal drug, in the treatment of arthritis. YUCCA saponins are as effective as metronidazole in killing Giardia lamblia tropozoites in the intestine. A Role of YUCCA in the Treatment of Arthritis can be advanced on the basis of the antiprotozoal activity of yucca saponins. A study by Japanese researchers has shown that a fraction of YUCCA saponins have showed potent antimicrobial activity against some food spoilage yeasts. Yucca extract has demonstrated in vitro activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhimurium . In vitro, a protein isolated from the leaves of YUCCA demonstrates potent activity against Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and has also inhibited the multiplication of HSV-2 and human cytomegalovirus, probably by inhibiting the synthesis protein in virus-infected cells, but not in uninfected cells. Platelet activating factor is a known inflammatory agent and YUCCA extracts have shown to inhibit its activity and enhance its degradation. Animal research also shows that oral intake of YUCCA extract reduces the concentrations of local inflammatory markers, in particular tumor necrosis factor 2 (TNF-R2) and nuclear factor kappa B. In vitro, a constituent of the bark of Yucca schidigera, has demonstrated antioxidant activity stronger than resveratrol. In vitro, YUCCA leaf extract acts as an antioxidant and scavenges free radicals. YUCCA fruit extract also reduced oxidative stress significantly dose-dependent.
