This unit was looked at by a tech before listing and is working it passes audio and compresses however i don’t have much experience in old Altec stuff and not really sure how they are meant to sound so can’t describe too much. This unit has the release setting mod, which offers release values of 2.5, 5. and 10 seconds instead of the more unconventional original release times. Signs of general use commensurate with age throughout, with the font panel having been re-screened to denote the modified values. Setup for 120v operation. Step-down transformer not included. The 1712A has a good clean signal path – audio passes only though an input buffer, VCA and output buffer. It has a hardwire relay bypass. The 1712A uses an SSM (later Analog Devices) 2103 VCA chip, similar to that in the UREI 7110, so will have a different sonic footprint to a dbx compressor.
