Originally, it would have had a grater, which would have fit inside and been removable, but this is missing. Opening a case would be the best way, as I will know to get back in touch asap. It is 2.8cm across the middle and about 1.6cm across the base.

Hinges are tight and have unusual gold ovals at each end. Fully hallmarked inside base as follows: Anchor for Birmingham, England; Lion passant (walking lion) indicating sterling silver; portrait in oval; date letter "a" denoting it was assayed in 1801; and the initials ML (inside rectangle) for maker's mark, Matthew Linwood.
