“Chesterman, Sheffield, England” with the JC lozenge mark. James Chesterman & Co. (founded 1820s, Sheffield) were pioneers in tape measure manufacture. By the 1860s they were producing flexible steel measuring tapes. The company was hugely important in the development of precision steel tape, and in 1963 merged with Rabone to form Rabone Chesterman, later part of Stanley Tools. ⸻ Given the combination of Flockton Tompkin case and Chesterman tape, this likely dates to the late 19th century to early 20th century (c. 1880–1910). The steel case could have been supplied by Flockton Tompkin (trademark prominent), with the working tape by Chesterman.
