The ATR30’s cardioid polar pattern reduces pickup of sounds from the sides and rear, improving isolation of desired sound source. The mic’s proximity effect provides added warmth when used close up.

The mic has exceptional uni-directional characteristics as well picking up only what's directly in front of it. The ATR30 is a fairly newer model. Not sure of the exact date on this mic but I'm thinking 2000 or newer.
