But rather than acknowledging a single note or fragrance category, 16A Orchard presents itself as a bit of a mystery. “You don’t immediately know what to do, and that’s what makes it interesting,” says Gerstner. “You can’t put your finger on the sore spot. That’s also the essence of the Lower East Side. It teaches you to think—and live—outside the box.” Earthy materials become airy in Voelkl’s hands. Ginger raises questions, leads you astray. Iris brings us back to the center of attention, revealing cold but delicate qualities. Quince and muguet amplify the roots. Dry cedarwood and cashmere-like tonka create a spicy and dry roundness for the more ephemeral notes of bergamot, lemon, cardamom and jasmine.
