Yucca schidigera, known as YUCCA, is a plant belonging to the Agavaceae family, native to the southwestern United States and Mexico. The Indians recognized YUCCA as “a tree of life” with beneficial health activities. Its extracts have been used for centuries in folk medicine to treat a wide variety of inflammatory disorders, especially headache head, gonorrhea, arthritis and rheumatism. It has been known for many years that saponins have antiprotozoal activity by complexing with cholesterol. in protozoan cell membranes, causing damage to membrane integrity and cell lysis. Yucca schidigera is a medicinal plant that may have beneficial effects in the prevention and treatment of arthritis. Platelet activating factor is a known inflammatory agent and YUCCA extracts have shown to inhibit its activity and enhance its degradation. Animal research also shows that oral intake of YUCCA extract reduces the concentrations of local inflammatory markers, in particular tumor necrosis factor 2 (TNF-R2) and nuclear factor kappa B. In vitro, a constituent of the bark of Yucca schidigera, has demonstrated antioxidant activity stronger than resveratrol.
