I chose Linux Mint - Cinnamon edition. Its very intuitive. It started slowing down and eventually I just couldn't get it to boot at all. I've never done anything with Linux, I like simplicity so use exclusively Mac now but within an hour or so of research and a usb drive I ended up bringing this machine back from the dead and it runs far better than it ever did on windows.
