Presumably this reflected the fact that the thimble represented a sort of contract in which not only did the lucky lady acquire a future husband but also the repair of his clothes. The problem with silver thimbles was that they were not fit for purpose.

It has an almost flat apex/ top and unusual ‘grid’ pattern on the sides and apex/ top. Silver with steel core - I believe this model was made between 1905 and 1948, after which Charles Horner ceased to make Dorcas thimbles.
