A number of years ago I installed a John East J-Tone active preamp which makes it far more versatile than a standard jazz bass. The knobs are now stacked pickup blend/master vol, stacked bass and treble cut and boost, and push-pull tone knob (pulling it bypasses the bass & treble active circuitry leaving you with the original passive circuit).
