The later, 1981/82 models generally have a black plastic bobbin, these are the ones found mostly on the Dan Smith Strats, Lead I/II series guitars and the very earliest of the JV series guitars. This one the early grey phenolic bobbins found only in 1980.

Their serial numbers can be seen in the photos. The black lead on the bridge pickup has been extended using wire from a 1970's pickup and sounds amazing. There are photos showing where the extra length was added.
