It has the features of a 17th century map, such as the decorative galleon in the channel, and the hills depicted as 'molehills'. The sheet is taken from Francis Grose's "The Antiquities of England and Wales" which was published in 1785-1787.

The map first appeared in a gazetteer of 1833, with editions following to 1848. This example has one railway marked on it, from London to Dover. This was opened in 1844. The extension from Ashford to Canterbury, which opened in 1846, is not marked.
