He was professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich between 1761 and 1773 and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1768. He collaborated for several years with publisher Robert Dodsley (1703-1764) who worked from Tully's Head in Pall Mall.
