These two countries are often shown together on 19th century maps. The reason for this is probably the existence at that time of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. Officially called in French the Royaume des Belgiques and in Dutch the Koninkrijk der Nederlanden, it was a state created by the Congress of Vienna in 1815 with the aim of making it a buffer state between the great European powers.
