The first edition, in Dutch in 1577, was translated and reprinted in French, Latin, and then in italian. On the verso of each map, a text exposes the knowledge of the represented region. It is a huge success despite its high price (it is reputed to be the most expensive book of its century).

The vast majority of the cities are situated along the Nile, which appears to divide the map in two before branching out into the Nile Delta. This allowed the cities a secure source of water. The Pyramids at Giza are illustrated, although a great number more than are actually present in Giza.
