    The town was destroyed by the Vandals in the 5th century CE. In the early 16th century, many of the Moors (Spanish Muslims) expelled from Spain sought asylum in Algiers. The emir of Algiers appealed to two Turkish corsairs to expel the Spaniards from the Peñon, and one of the corsairs, Barbarossa (Khayr al-Dīn), seized Algiers in 1529, expelled the Spaniards, and placed Algiers under the authority of the Ottoman sultan.

    In 1492 and 1502 Oran received colonies of Spanish Muslims (Moors) fleeing from forcible conversion to Christianity. It was occupied by the Spanish in 1509. (1875-94), great work of Elisee Reclus. Oran was one of the principal objectives in the Allied landings in North Africa and was captured by U.S. forces on November 10, 1942.
