This English oak piece features deep hand-carved panels with classic Jacobean strapwork and floral motifs, flanked by turned baluster columns with scrollwork capitals. The thick plank top retains its original character, now fixed in place, while the base and sides show honest wear from over 300 years of use.

Features indicate a date not later than 1560-70. The large lunette was introduced late in the reign of Hery VIII. The interior till is at the left side, as is the case with all chests of th C16 and earier (C17 chests have tils at right side).

An excellent, very old 17/18th Century Antique oak coffer chest.. Possible restoration work carried out prior to the 1930s. Lid show signs of warpage, patina and or possible replacement, hinges look as they were changed around the 1930s. Possible two plank lid or a split lid. No sign of wood worm.
