To go further in its quest for naturalness and to bring us closer to the scent of a natural garden rose, Bon Parfumeur used recycled ingredients. Processed by steam distillation, the rose petal releases a scented essential oil. The distillation waters that still contain some odorous molecules are then recovered and, after several cycles of manipulation of these waters, a new rose scent is obtained. In 2021, it has taken on a deeper meaning for the founders of Aedes de Venustas, Robert Gerstner and Karl Bradl. “Every single soul has gone through a major change in their life,” says Gerstner. “During this time, we have rooted ourselves here, in this neighborhood that represents the change of New York. Without knowing it, we have created something much more important.” Not just a smell, but a feeling. Something that feeds and then grows. “Using natural root ingredients like ginger and iris reconnects us to our earth, making us feel grounded and centered,” says perfumer Frank Voelkl. But rather than acknowledging a single note or fragrance category, 16A Orchard presents itself as a bit of a mystery. “You don’t immediately know what to do, and that’s what makes it interesting,” says Gerstner. “You can’t put your finger on the sore spot. That’s also the essence of the Lower East Side. It teaches you to think—and live—outside the box.” Earthy materials become airy in Voelkl’s hands. Ginger raises questions, leads you astray. Iris brings us back to the center of attention, revealing cold but delicate qualities. Quince and muguet amplify the roots. Dry cedarwood and cashmere-like tonka create a spicy and dry roundness for the more ephemeral notes of bergamot, lemon, cardamom and jasmine.
