  8. The Spook Who Sat By The Door

The Spook Who Sat By The Door: The first Black man in the CIA (2024)  Dan Freeman, 'the spook who sat by the door', is enlisted in the CIA's elitist espionage program after a white senator decries the lack of Black officers in the agency. The first Black man in the Central Intelligence Agency, Freeman is given a desk job. Despite excelling, promotions are hard to come by as the token black in the CIA. Deciding he's had enough, Freeman uses the tactics he learns in the CIA to foment violent rebellion in Chicago, in a mirror image of the coups wrought around the world by the Agency itself. With its focus on the militancy that characterised the Black Power movement of the 1960s and 1970s, this is the story of one man's reaction to ruling-class hypocrisy in ways that make the novel autobiographical and personal. As a tale of a reaction to the forces of oppression, this brilliant and funny satire by Sam Greenlee proves to be just as potent today as it was when it originally was published.  DETAILS : • Pages: 280• Publisher: Jacaranda books• Imprint: Jacaranda Books• Publication Date: 10th October 2024• Trim Size: 158 x 238 mm• ISBN: 9781914344404• Format: Trade binding  AUTHOR BIO: Over the course of his career, Sam Greenlee was been a novelist, activist, poet, screenwriter, actor, journalist, teacher, All-American middle-distance runner, martial artist, and talk show host. Born in Chicago on July 13, 1930, Greenlee attended Chicago public schools. At age fifteen, Greenlee participated in his first sit-in and walked in his first picket line; his social activism continued throughout his life.In 1952, Greenlee received his B.S. in political science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. After two years' service as an infantry Lieutenant, Greenlee entered graduate school at the University of Chicago, studying international relations from 1954 to 1957. In 1957, he began an eight-year career with the Foreign Services Officer, serving in Iraq, East Pakistan, Indonesia, and Greece, and in 1959, was awarded the Meritorious Service Award for bravery during the Baghdad revolution of July 14, 1958; the civilian equivalent of the army's Distinguished Service Cross.Greenlee's first and most well-known novel,  The Spook Who Sat by the Door  was written in 1966, and first published in London in 1969 by Allison & Busby after unanimous rejection in the United States. It was published in the U.S. in 1970 by Bantam Books, and more recently by Wayne State University Press. This prize-winning, best-selling novel quickly became an underground favourite for its fictionalisation of an urban-based war for African American liberation. Without their parents, the children feel dispersed, trying to keep hold of each other. Now in his forties, Redesof works as an acupuncturist in post-Brexit London. From his balcony in Hackney he talks to his beautiful neighbour Telma telling her his story; of his childhood of migration from Congo to Italy to Britain, hoping to come to some sort of resolution with his past.A heartfelt tale of displacement, family, and home, Ground delivers a story with international scope that is vital in today's world.  DETAILS : • Pages: 576• Publisher: Jacaranda books• Imprint: Jacaranda Books• Publication Date: 14th November 2024• Trim Size: 130 x 198 mm• ISBN: 9781914344688• Format: B-format paperback  AUTHOR BIO: Jadelin Gangbo is a writer and acupuncturist based in East London. He had appeared as an actor in a short film,  Il Contratto  (2002) directed by Guido Chiesa, and taught creative writing in multicultural centres, high schools, and a juvenile detention in Bologna. His latest and most personal novel is his first written in English. Taking over 14 years to complete, Jadelin started the novel when he first arrived in the country and could barely speak the language. 12. Finding Home A Windrush Story

Finding Home A Windrush Story   RAF Veteran and Prince's Trust Awardee, Alford Dalrymple Gardner was one of the last living passengers to have travelled on the Empire Windrush. Now published in paperback, Finding Home is his stirring life story. On 22nd June 1948, the Empire Windrush sailed from Kingston, Jamaica, to harbour at Tilbury Docks. It carried 1,027 passengers and two stowaways, and more than two thirds of them were West Indies nationals. Alford Dalrymple Gardner was among them.Alford's story traverses both the uplifting highs and intolerant lows that West Indian migrants of his generation encountered upon travelling to Britain to forge out a life. From joining the British military during World War II to being forcibly deported back to Jamaica once it was won-only to come back to the UK when the government decided it needed him again-Alford witnessed milestone events of the 20th century that shaped the country he still lives in today. In the context of a supposedly 'post-Imperial' Britain where the lives of West Indian migrants hang precariously on the whims of the Home Office, Alford's heartening testimony is a celebration of those who endured hardships so that generations to come could call this place home.Today, Alford's portrait is a part of the Royal Collection Trust as commissioned by King Charles III in 2023, and he is a regular face and voice on the likes of The BBC, Channel 4, Sky News and more as his story continues to embody for all, the spirit of joyous resilience.  DETAILS : • Pages: 320• Publisher: Jacaranda books• Imprint: Jacaranda Books• Publication Date: 3rd October 2024• Trim Size: 128 x 196 mm• ISBN: 9781914344237• Format: Paperback  AUTHOR BIO: Alford Dalrymple Gardner (Author) Born in 1926 in Kingston, Jamaica, Alford Gardner first came to England in 1944 to support the war effort, serving in the RAF. After a brief stay back in Jamaica, he decided to return to England to help to rebuild the country. He boarded the HMT Empire Windrush intending to build a life in the country he once called home. Despite a less than accommodating welcome back, he persisted and succeeded in forging a better life for his family. In his later years, Alford spent all his leisure time at the bingo hall. When not playing bingo, he would watch sports or spend time with his family. A much fuller sense of Alford's life is conveyed in his autobiography:  Finding Home .Alford passed away in 2024 at the age of 98. Check out more of our products at our shop

LOTE By Shola von Reinhold  WINNER of the James Tait Black Prize 2021 and The Republic of Consciousness Prize 2021.As seen in  Document Journal,   Guardian  and  The White Review Solitary Mathilda has long been enamored with the 'Bright Young Things' of the 20s, and throughout her life, her attempts at reinvention have mirrored their extravagance and artfulness. After discovering a photograph of the forgotten Black modernist poet Hermia Druitt, who ran in the same circles as the Bright Young Things that she adores, Mathilda becomes transfixed and resolves to learn as much as she can about the mysterious figure. Her search brings her to a peculiar artists' residency in Dun, a small European town Hermia was known to have lived in during the 30s. The artists' residency throws her deeper into a lattice of secrets and secret societies that takes hold of her aesthetic imagination, but will she be able to break the thrall of her Transfixions? From champagne theft and Black Modernisms, to art sabotage, alchemy and lotus-eating proto-luxury communist cults, Mathilda's journey through modes of aesthetic expression guides her to truth and the convoluted ways it is made and obscured.  DETAILS : • Pages: 472• Publisher: Jacaranda books• Imprint: Jacaranda Books• Series: Twenty in 2020• Publication Date: 26th March 2020• Trim Size: 128 x 196 mm• ISBN: 9781913090111• Format: B-format paperback  AUTHOR BIO: Shola von Reinhold is a writer and artist born and based in Glasgow. 16. Lady Doctors By Kavitha Rao

Lady Doctors By Kavitha Rao  At a time when medicine is a highly sought-after career for Indian women, it is hard to imagine what it was like for the pioneers. The story of how firmly they were bound in fetters of family, caste and society, and how fiercely they fought to escape, needs to be told. In Lady Doctors, Kavitha Rao unearths the extraordinary stories of six women from the 1860s to the 1930s, who defied the idea that they were unfit for medicine by virtue of their gender. From Anandibai Joshi, who broke caste rules by crossing an ocean, to Rukhmabai Raut, who escaped a child marriage, divorced her husband and studied to be a doctor; from Kadambini Ganguly, who took care of eightchildren while she worked, to child widow Haimabati Sen, who overcame poverty and hardship-these women had a profound and lasting impact. And in their forgotten lives lie many lessons for modern women. In truth, the compelling stories of these radical women have been erased from our textbooks and memories, because histories have mostly been written by men, about men. In an immensely readable narrative, and with impeccable research, Lady Doctors rectifies this omission.  DETAILS : • Pages: 272• Publisher: Jacaranda books• Imprint: Jacaranda Books• Publication Date: 7th September 2023• Trim Size: 164 x 240 mm• ISBN: 9781914344985• Format: Trade binding  Check out more of our products at our shop
