Originally designed as part of "The Gates of Hell" project dating from 1881, Rodin envisioned "Eve" as one of the figures to flank the monumental gates. The story behind this particular sculpture is as intriguing as the work itself. Rodin began modeling a large female figure but had to pause when his pregnant model could no longer pose. It wasn't until 1899 that he exhibited this unfinished masterpiece, showcasing his willingness to present works in a fragmentary state. The rough surface, the absence of intricate details, and the visible metal armature on the right foot all attest to the piece's ongoing evolution. In contrast, Rodin completed a smaller version of "Eve" in 1882, which was met with widespread acclaim. This larger bronze replica faithfully captures the sensuality of her body.
