Vabalathus was joint ruler of Palmyra with his mother Zenobia. Aurelian granted him his titles, favor which had been refused previously to him by Gallienus, and later, by Claudius Gothicus. Then, when Vabalathus declared himself Emperor in AD 271, Aurelian marched against him, ending the rule of Zenobia and Vabalathus, and adding the Palmyrene empire to the territories ruled by the Romans.
