On the RS-X40W, the 'Tape 1' (right side) is for playback only so if you just wanted to play a tape then this is the side you would use. The 'Tape 2' (left side) is for recording and the playback of the recording process so this is the side you would use for recording only.

Does Record, but Record button does not stay on. Cassette working fine, doesnt seem to have any lag. Reverse and Forward ⏩ button do spin cassette, but does not stay on when pressed. Both work fine, Balance work fine too.
