Following a year of graduate study in art history at Columbia University, McKnight joined Time Magazine in 1964, where he remained for eight years—his tenure briefly interrupted by military service in South Korea. In 1972, he left journalism to pursue painting full-time, spending a transformative summer on the Greek island of Mykonos. The island’s radiant light and idyllic architecture would become central to his visual vocabulary. It was there, in 1979, that he met Renate, an Austrian student who would later become his wife and muse.
